Hi! My name is Isabel Johnson. I’m a Junior in college, I have been sewing for 10 years, but in 2020 I started making clothes for myself. I have a passion for sustainability which is why all of the clothing I create is made using upcycled and second hand materials. This website is a portfolio for the things I have sewn in the past and my most recent creations and projects. Isabel Starr is a handmade clothing brand I started, I make unique and custom pieces to help combat fast fashion. Design Statement
My personal design aesthetic can be defined by key words, handmade, antique, intricate and unique I am inspired by the past lives of materials, where they have been and who they have been worn by. Taking someone else’s discarded clothing and creating a new piece of art is a quintessential element of my design process. Allowing the body’s natural curves to guide the draping while playing with flowing silhouettes contrasted by rigid lines Neutrals are some of my favorite colors to work with, combining them with texture to add richness and depth to a garment. Details are key, the more trim, lace and intricacy I can add to a design the better, mimicking the depth and nuances of past lives of vintage materials.
